Yays is a new, refreshing aparthotel (a hotel with apartments) concept from the Netherlands focussing on urban neighbourhoods off the beaten track. We were asked to design their first foreign venture in one of Barcelona’s less attractive neighbourhoods: Horta. In view of the budget restraints, and inspired by the typical, colourful Casas Indianas, we adopted a design strategy based on colour, applying distinct colours to the different levels of public and private spaces. The lobby has a more neutral, grey-beige tone, the interior corridors a vivid salmon, the apartments a calming green, and the pool area a fresh turquoise.
Responding to the project brief, most furniture was locally sourced. Big powerful elements like the entrance backsplash and the swimming pool pergola were cleverly designed to minimize cost but maximise effect. The exterior terrace was subject to substantial budget cuts, but it is hardly noticeable because of the pergola the play of colour and the abundant vegetation.
MOST DIFFICULT PART OF THE PROJECT
A limited budget: it didn’t always extend to the high ambitions both we and the client had, which was a great lesson in compromise.
WHAT WE ARE MOST PROUD OF
To successfully create a local adaptation with a strong inherent personality of an already strong Dutch brand without losing its core values.
